Emily Amick Lawyer, Journalist, Political Analyst, Author
About the Author
Emily Amick is a lawyer, journalist, and political analyst who served as counsel to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. She is the face behind the viral Instagram account @EmilyinYourPhone, where she offers her expert insight into the political process and helps people find ways they can take action. She is also the founder of For Facts Sake, an organization dedicated to creating persuasive social media content that informs and engages people outside traditional political echo chambers. They have launched impactful campaigns such as #NoRightWay in Spring 2024, which drew attention to the war on reproductive freedom, #DontFallBack in Fall 2023, and #PhoneCallsNotFlowers in Spring 2023.
Amick’s New York Times bestselling book, Democracy in Retrograde: How to Make Changes Big and Small in Our Country and in Our Lives, co-authored with Sami Sage, is a self-help and political manifesto for anyone who wants to save our democracy but doesn’t know where to start. In today’s political climate, making a change can feel like a daunting task, but by reframing civic engagement as a form of self-care, an assertion of one’s values and self-respect, this book breaks down how anyone can make a difference. Democracy in Retrograde is not just about voting, but about claiming your singular place in your country and community.
In her keynotes, Amick discusses her first-hand experiences in the Senate, as well as how Congress undertakes bills, amendments, and nominations, etc. with candor and enthusiasm. She clearly connects how the everyday actions of civilians can affect this political process. Amick encourages audience members to think smaller, discover their strengths, and use them to make the world a better place.
Amick attended Wellesley College, later received a master’s in journalism from the University of Alabama, and a law degree from Columbia University. She now lives in Washington DC.
